Square announces new credit card reader that is thinner and has better performance

Posted Dec 9, 2013

Square has created a new mobile credit card reader device for accepting payment through the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The new Square Reader has a better performance and thinner design.

“We engineered purpose-built components to create both excellent performance and beautiful design, without compromise,” stated Jesse Dorogusker, head of Hardware at Square.

The design is 45% thinner than the original, which matches the thickness of an iPhone 5s. The readhead on the new Square device parses redundant data from credit cards to make sure that swipes are successful on the first go.

The new Square Reader is available today at square.com. It is free for anyone that signs up for a Square account and is available at 30,000 retail stores nationwide.
