The One World Trade Center Is The Tallest Building In America Now

Posted Nov 13, 2013

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has named the One World Trade Center in New York City as the tallest building in the U.S.  The One World Trade Center is now at 1,776 feet.  The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is the body that determines the heights of buildings around the world.  The One World Trade Center’s 408 foot spire was questioned at first and was strongly considered about whether it would be considered a part of the building’s total height.  Broadcast antennas are not considered a part of a building’s height.  Since spires are an integral part of a building’s design, it counts as the height.  The committee announced on Tuesday that the spire was a permanent part of the tower.

?We were very satisfied with the detailed information presented by the team, in particular, that which affirmed that the structure on top of the building is meant as a permanent architectural feature, not a piece of functional-technical equipment,? stated Timothy Johnson, the chairman of CTBUH and Design Partner at NBBJ, in a press release.

The One World Trade now has a height of 1,776 feet.  This means that it is taller than the Chicago Willis Tower.  The Willis Tower has a height of 1,451 feet.  The One World Trade Center will likely be the third tallest building in the world after the 2,717-foot-tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
