International Business Machines and a few partners have announced that they have formed an alliance to license IBM’s server hardware and firmware.  The alliance is called the OpenPower Consortium.

The alliance may be able to come up with new designs and alternatives to the x86 architecture, according to ZDNet.  IBM will be using Power technology to push hardware designs with their partners like Google, Mellanox, Nvidia, and Tyan.  They will build server, networking, storage, and GPU acceleration technologies for hyper-scaling.

The consortium ail offer open source Power firmware for controlling basic chip functions.  The OpenPower Consortium will use a “collaborative development model”
