Paul McCarthy Make His Son A Prosthetic Hand Using 3D Printer

Posted Nov 5, 2013

Leon McCarthy was born without fingers on his left hand, but with the help of 3D printing he has received a prosthetic left hand.  Instead of paying tens of thousands of dollars for a prosthetic hand made at a factory, Leon’s father Paul McCarthy made one.

Paul spent two years researching affordable ways to get his 12-year-old son a prosthetic hand.  He found a YouTube video that told the story of Ivan Owen.  Owen used a 3D printer to create a prosthetic hand for a 5-year-old in 2011.  McCarthy used a 3D printer that was purchased for his son’s school and he started working on the hand for his son.

Paul McCarthy used online directions from Owen to put the prosthetic hand together.  Paul plans to teach students how to print hands and give them to other kids that need them.
