According to The Wall Street Journal, a YouTube channel called PewDiePie generates $4 million per year. The channel was created by Felix Kjellberg. Kjellberg creates “Lets Play” videos for his 27 million subscribers.
“Unlike many professionally produced shows, I think I’ve established a much closer contact with my viewers, breaking the wall between the viewer and what’s behind the screen,” said Kjellberg in an interview with the WSJ. “What I and other YouTubers do is a very different thing, it’s almost like hanging around and watching your pal play games. My fans care in a different way about what they are watching.”
Kjellberg’s audience is mostly teenagers that watch him play games and respond to what he is doing. PewDiePie signed a deal with Maker Studios in December 2012, which is a producer of online content that takes a cut of the ad sales that sold to Disney for nearly $1 billion. His viewers are known as “Pewds.”
PewDiePie helped propel Flappy Bird into popularity on the Apple App Store. He created a clip called “Flappy Bird?Don’t Play This Game.” That video has been watched around 18 million times and the game was downloaded millions of times after the clip was uploaded.
