Pinterest has hired the former Facebook monetization expert Tim Kendall to find a way to make money at their company. Pinterest hit a tipping point in the last 6 months and grew their user base faster than any other social network out there.
Pinterest is known as a virtual scrapbook is still in private beta and they recently experimented with an affiliate program that linked to the websites of merchants when specific items were “pinned.” This would give Pinterest a commission if the referral visitor purchased a product. Facebook currently makes most of their revenue by mining personal data of their users to provide contextual data to advertisers.
While at Facebook, Kendall created “sponsored stories” to show which of your friends likes the products or services being advertised. Perhaps we will see “sponsored pins” soon.
