Pinterest announces first transparency report

Posted Mar 8, 2014

On Friday, Pinterest revealed the number of information requests that were received from the state and federal government in the past 6 months. Interestingly, the government does not really turn to Pinterest much for gathering user information.

Between July and December 2013, there were only 12 government requests total. None of the requests came from agencies outside of the U.S. and only one request was from a federal agency. Pinterest produced information for 11 out of 12 requests.

“Every company that stores information ? from banks to phone companies to email providers ? must respond to requests for that information from folks like law enforcement agencies, courts, and others,” stated Pinterest project manager Adam Barton. “We think it?s important that you know about these requests.”

Now let’s compare these numbers to Facebook and Twitter. Twitter received 1,410 requests in the last six months of 2013 and Facebook received around 38,000 requests for the first six months of 2013.
