Plain Vanilla Raises $2.4 Million

Based in Reykjavik, Iceland, Plain Vanilla is the developer of QuizUp, the world’s first real-time social trivia platform for mobile devices.  Plain Vanilla has raised $2.4 million in Series A funding led by Greycroft Partners, Tencent, IDG Ventures, BOLDStart Ventures, Crunchfund, Mesa Global, Brandon Beck (Riot Games CEO), and David Helgason (Unity CEO) .

The funding will be used to accelerate the development of QuizUp.  The company also plans to expand into Asia.  Plain Vanilla previously raised a $1.2 million seed round of funding in summer 2012.  The company has raised a total of $3.6 million.

“After launching our initial batch of QuizUp games we saw amazing engagement amongst our users and realized that we could use our technology to build a new kind of Social experience,” stated Plain Vanilla CEO and founder Thor Fridriksson. “In the QuizUp platform, users will be able to discover and communicate with people around the world based on their interests, a unique and low friction way to establish connections between individuals from different cultures while also enabling the maintenance and deepening of existing relationships with friends.”

Plain Vanilla hit around 1 million registered users on QuizUp this past quarter across multiple apps on Android and iOS.  Ellie Wheeler (Greycroft Partners) and David Helgason (Unity CEO) is joining Plain Vanilla?s Board of Directors in conjunction with the funding.
