Planet Labs is a space technology company that used to be known as Cosmogia. The company rebranded recently and has announced that they have raised $13 million in funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Capricorn, OATV, Founders Fund Angel, Innovation Endeavors, Data Collective and First Round Capital. Planet Labs was started by former NASA research scientists.
So what does Planet Labs do?
Planet Labs is going to launch several imaging satellites that will map the Earth so that we can better understand changes being made to the planet and ecosystems. Planet Labs launched two imaging satellites this past April for testing.

Robbie Schingler, William Marshall and Chris Boshuizen founded Planet Labs in 2010. All three of them are physicists that used to work at NASA. The three of them met at a conference about how space discovery can benefit humanity. All of them have worked on small scientific satellites at NASA Ames after that conference. Schingler helped launch the NASA Space Technology program at the NASA headquarters.
Planet Labs plans to take snapshots of the Earth regularly as a way to help weather professionals and farmers. Planet Labs calls their imaging satellites Doves.
?Planet Labs will create an entirely new data set, with both humanitarian and commercial value,? stated Tim O?Reilly of O?Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. ?We?ve become used to having imagery of the entire Earth. What we haven?t yet understood is how transformative it will be when that imagery is regularly and frequently updated.?
