Puppet Labs is a company that has created an open source tool called Puppet that is used to automatically configure hundreds and thousands of servers using simple scripts.  Puppet is used heavily by development operations teams.  By acquiring Cloudsmith, Puppet Labs will be able to enhance their developer tools.  The terms of the acquisition was undisclosed.

Puppet Labs founder and CEO Luke Kanies said that the Cloudsmith team has expertise in the Eclipse developer tools ecosystem along with open source software.  Puppet Labs and Cloudsmith have worked together for the last few years.  Cloudsmith is going to connect their IDE called Gepetto to the Puppet infrastructure to retrieve Puppet modules from GitHub, according to TechCrunch.  This will be used to automatically install, configure, and deploy the applications on Amazon EC2.

“The Cloudsmith team is stacked with an exceptional group of technologists who are influential and heavily involved in both the Puppet and Eclipse communities,” stated Kanies. “Like Puppet Labs, Cloudsmith cares about its products’ ease of use and has tremendous expertise in building great tools. We look forward to leveraging Cloudsmith’s experience and technology in our product suite to make automation accessible to an even larger segment of enterprise IT professionals.”
