Qubole that was founded by former Facebook engineers Ashish Thusoo and Joydeep Sen Sarma. The company has raised $7 million in funding between their seed round in late 2011 and their recent Series A, according to GigaOM. Qubole is building the next generation cloud data platform, which hides the complexity of storing and managing data. Qubole’s services can run a variety of Hadoop tasks like Hive, MapReduce, and Pig in the Amazon Web Services cloud.
Charles River Ventures and Lightspeed Ventures led the Series A round. Hive is a data warehouse system that uses SQL-like code. Thusoo and Sen Sarma helped create Hive while working at Facebook. Qubole opened their platform in December 2012 and they have processed half a petabyte in customer data since then.
Qubole’s largest users are in the e-commerce, application development, and advertising industry. Qubole’s platform is often used to create pipelines that uses Hadoop to process unstructured data before pushing it to relational databases like Infobright, MySQL, and Vertica. Qubole also has connectors for retrieving data from various data-sets in platforms like MongoDB. Qubole is also working on allowing customers to import data through their API from services like Google Analytics and Omniture.
