Ranker is a startup where users are expected to vote on the best and worst of everything. The company has raised $2 million in a new round of funding. Ranker raised funding from Lowercase Capital, BullPen Ventures, and Data Collective. Draper Associates, Rincon Venture Partners, Siemer Ventures, TenOneTen, Tech Coast Angels, and Pasadena Angels also participated in this round. Ranker has raised a total of $5.1 million.
Users can vote on every item on the lists like the “funniest movies of all time.” Ranker is using the data to build an “opinion graph” so that people can see different opinions that are related to each other.
Ranker CEO Clark Benson believes that the graph can be used by other companies so that they can create a data service. Their data service would add a new monetary opportunity aside from just advertising and affiliate links.
In terms of traffic, Ranker saw almost 8 million monthly visitors and over 78 million page views this past month. Voting for content can be quite addictive for users and can be a more reliable source than one person’s opinion.
