Apple has opened up their fat wallet to buyout Passif Semiconductor, according to Jessica Lessin. Founded by two UC Berkeley PhD students, Passif Semiconductor will enable Apple to build their own low power chips.
One of Passif’s largest investors was Khosla Ventures. Apple previously acquired other semiconductor companies P.A. Semi in 2008 and Intrinsity in 2010.
Apple also acquired a biometric security company called Authentec, which led to rumors that Apple will be putting fingerprint identification in the upcoming new iPhone.
