Research firm IDC has published some new numbers about the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system. According to IDC, around 800 million Android smartphone shipped in the year 2013.
The smartphone market shipped around 1 billion devices overall for the first time during 2013. Android and iOS dominated the market with 95.7% of all smartphone shipments in Q4 2013.
Even though marketing campaigns focus on higher end devices, consumers are going for cheaper smartphones. Smartphones that were $200 or less grew to 42.6% of the global volume.
Out of the 800 million smartphones sold in 2013, around 430 million were cheaper devices. Android led the smartphone race with 39.5% of the market. iOS was in second place with 17.6% of the market. Windows Phone was in third place and BlackBerry was in last place. Blackberry was the only company to see negative year-over-year change.
