Generally you hear about companies in Silicon Valley hiring executives that have experience with Capitol Hill. It is rare that you hear about a Capitol Hill based organization poach talent from tech companies. The Republican National Committee (RNC) has hired Andy Barkett from Facebook as a way to reach tech savvy voters. Barkett will be the GOP’s first CTO and he will help Republicans use the Internet to connect with voters.
“It’s essential that the Republican Party has the resources to drive voter turnout as we look toward the elections of 2014, 2016, and beyond,” said Barkett in a statement. “Silicon Valley welcomes the party’s efforts to be more creative and innovative, and I look forward to helping the party accomplish these goals.” Altogether, Barkett has more than a decade’s worth of experience working in the tech world.
Barkett has worked in the tech world for over 10 years. He worked as an engineer at Facebook where he worked across six production engineering teams focused on scaling mobile infrastructure, messaging, advertisements, news feeds, platforms, and payments. Barkett also worked at Google between 2006 and 2008 as a technical program manager. Barkett has an MBA from UC Davis and also worked as a consultant for the IT services company Taos Mountain. Barkett worked at Livescribe for two years as an engineering director and co-founder organic clothing company Greenlight Apparel.
