Samsung Electronics has acquired a digital video startup company called Boxee. The financial details of the acquisition is unknown, but Jewish Press is reporting that it was for $30 million. Samsung did not confirm the price. Boxee raised around $26.5 million in total funding across 3 rounds. Boxee started off as a service to organize web videos. Later they released video box hardware that was similar to the Apple TV and Roku player. Shortly after that, the company transitioned into a cloud-based DVR company. Boxee’s team will likely work on connected TV initiatives at Samsung going forward.
