Samsung Electronics acquired Boxee last week and now they will be shutting down the Cloud DVR service on July 10th. Boxee launched the Cloud DVR service this past April. The Boxee costs $99 and it included 5 hours of storage per month with the ability to store recordings for up to 90 days. Boxee offered unlimited storage for an extra $10 per month with the ability to store recordings forever and access content on portable devices.
“For Boxee users, we?re working behind the scenes to ensure there?s minimal impact to your devices. However, the beta Cloud DVR functionality we provided to certain Boxee TV users will be discontinued on July 10th. You will not have access to your existing recordings after that date. We realize many of you loved the service, and we?re sorry it won?t be available moving forward,” said Boxee in a statement.
Consumers that bought a Boxee Cloud DVR will lose their content on July 10th. Perhaps Boxee’s technology will end up Samsung televisions one day.
