Samsung Electronics has denied that they are shutting down their PC division.  “The rumor that Samsung is withdrawing from the PC desktop business is groundless. Samsung will continue to offer diverse PC products according to consumer and market needs,” said the company in a statement.  The rumor originated from the Korea Times.

The Korea Times report said that Samsung is reportedly shutting down their desktop PC business due to weak demand in order to focus on their handheld devices.  A Samsung official reportedly told The Korea Times that they will be diverting their resources to their popular connected and portable devices and increase their research teams and technology development units for tablets and AIO laptops.

The PC industry as a whole is seeing a slowdown.  For Q1 2013, the PC shipments worldwide saw 76.3 million shipments, which is down 13.9% compared to the same quarter in 2012.  The tablet market grew around 142.5% year-on-year for Q1 2013, which is up from 20.3 million units in Q1 2012 according to IDC.  Samsung saw the largest growth in the tablet industry at 17.9%.
