Samsung Gets Denied The Right To A New Trial, Still Has To Pay $1.05 Billion In Damages To Apple

Posted Jan 30, 2013

Remember when Samsung Electronics was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion? Apple asked Judge Lucy Koh to have that amount tripled, but she denied that request.  However Samsung was also denied the right to have a new trial even though it was determined that the company did not willfully infringe Apple’s iPad patents.

Because of that investigation, Apple was denied their petition to have an increase in damages awarded.  After the trial concluded, other decisions that were reached include that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not infringe Apple’s design patents and that two of Samsung’s claims regarding wireless transmission patents and wireless systems were invalid.

Samsung has not yet announced whether they plan to present further arguments or evidence that shows whether the patent infringements were unintentional.
