Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has named Satya Nadella as CEO and a member of the Board of Directors effective immediately. Nadella was previously the Executive Vice President of Microsoft?s Cloud and Enterprise group. Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 and drove the strategy and technical shifts across Microsoft’s product portfolio. He also helped drive Microsoft’s move to the cloud for supporting Bing, Xbox, Office, and other servers.

?During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,? stated Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. ?Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.?

?Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionized the world through technology, and I couldn?t be more honored to have been chosen to lead the company,? said Nadella. ?The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly.?

The Microsoft board of directors now includes Steve Ballmer, Dina Dublon, Bill Gates, Maria M. Klawe, Stephen J. Luczo, David F. Marquardt, Charles H. Noski, Dr. Helmut Panke, and John Thompson.

?Having worked with him for more than 20 years, I know that Satya is the right leader at the right time for Microsoft,? added outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer. ?I?ve had the distinct privilege of working with the most talented employees and senior leadership team in the industry, and I know their passion and hunger for greatness will only grow stronger under Satya?s leadership.?

Bill Gates will no longer be chairman at Microsoft. Nadella asked Bill Gates to take a role as technology advisor to Nadella.

“I’m thrilled that Satya has asked me to step up, substantially increasing my time at the company,” added Gates. “I’ll have over a third of my time available to meet with product groups and it’ll be fun to define this next round of products working together.”
