Sony Corporation (TYO:6758) is the winner in the 2013 console wars. Andy House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that the company sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2012. As a direct comparison, Microsoft sold 3 million Xbox One consoles across 13 countries in 2013.
Sony started to sell the PlayStation 4 one week before the Xbox One. The Sony PlayStation 4 is now available in 53 markets and the Xbox One is only available in 13 markets. Sony will be launching the PlayStation 4 in Japan next month.
As Microsoft starts to launch the Xbox One in additional markets, they will likely be able to catch-up to Sony. At CES, Sony also announced PlayStation Now, which is a streaming service that lets players stream older games on the PS4, PS3, PS Vita, tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs.
