Spanish City Offers Unlimited Tram Passes in Exchange for Cars

Posted Jul 18, 2011

Murcia, a city in Spain with a new tram system and some old traffic congestion problems, has announced a program to get residents to be a little greener. Murcia citizens can get a lifetime tram ticket in exchange for their cars. Inhabitat reports that turning in a car, so long as it runs and is paid for, earns not only a tram ticket for life, but some public art installations as well.

The sacrificed cars are placed around the city and stripped piece-by-piece, one piece removed for every Facebook or Twitter comment the project receives. The entire process is broadcast via webcams. The goal is to take working cars out of the equation, for the environmental benefit of reduced emissions.
