As many of you know, Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) introduced free WiFi this year finally. Starbucks is now integrating the Starbucks Digital Network across their 6,800 U.S. operated stores. SDN will showcase content from The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The New York Times. There will be a News, Entertainment, Wellness, Business, and My Neighborhood section.
SDN was designed using HTML5 so that you can view the content on the iPhone and iPad also. Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) will be powering the search for SDN. If SDN users make a purchase from partners, then Starbucks will make money through a revenue sharing agreement. This is one way that Starbucks plans to make up for the cost of offering free WiFi to consumers.
?Tens of millions of customers are coming in to our stores and logging in to our Wi-Fi on a monthly basis anyways. They?re coming in because we provide this great experience ? good music overhead, quality food and coffee and the opportunity to connect with your friends or the baristas ? What we hope is that this is a nice complement to that experience,? said Starbucks in an interview.
