Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) is planning to install Powermat wireless charging stations at its coffee stores across the U.S. Starbucks was running a small pilot run called “Powermat Spots,” which are small circles that were implanted at tables and counters.
The larger rollout of the wireless phone chargers will start at Starbucks and Teavana locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. More wireless power chargers will be rolled out into Starbucks’ coffee and tea shops nationwide from there.
In 2014, it will be mainly focused on the west coast. But this will be followed with expansions to major metropolitan cities across the U.S. in 2015.
Each store will have an average of 10 or more Powermat Spots. During early trials in Boston and San Jose, people used the Powermat Spots for an average of 15 minutes.
