Subaru is recalling around 634,000 vehicles in the United States for lighting issues that potentially leads to smoke or fire. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. is recalling Forester vehicles from 2009-2012, Legacy and Outback vehicles from 2010-2012, and some types of Tribeca vehicles from 2006-2012 according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The vehicles affected by the recall may be built with accessory puddle lights that brighten the areas under the doors when lit. A short circuit may occur when the light or connector is exposed to an electrolytic moisture source like a certain type of road spray or road salt. The heat generated can cause the plastic to melt — which causes smoke or fire. Subaru is letting owners know and dealers will install an additional harness. The recall is starting next month.
