Terra Motors Corporation has announced a new electric scooter called the A4000i. The A4000i has a smartphone connection and Terra Motors is the first Japanese company to mass produce a wireless and smartphone-connected scooter.
Terra Motors is targeting around 100,000 unit sales of this model and an older model by 2015, especially in the Asian market since the demand there is strong. By using a smartphone connection and data collected from each electric scooter, Terra Motors plans to deliver new services with big data in medium to long-term.
“The most valuable data is location information. By collecting and analyzing the location information of users, new services such as personalized advertisement will be possible,” said Terra Motors in a statement.
The Terra Motors electric scooter has a built-in iPhone dock, which can store details like remaining battery life, electricity consumption, average speed, average mileage, and navigation information.
Terra Motors’ electric scooters will sell for around $4,500 and it will be compatible with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5. The A4000 model of the electric scooter will not require an iPhone, but the pricing of that model is not yet known.
The Terra Motors electric scooter has a range of about 65 km (40 miles). The removable lithium-ion battery is supposed to last up to 50,000km (31,000 miles) with a full battery charge that takes around 4.5 hours.
