Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) Has Plans To Make An Autonomous Vehicle With 90% Computer Control Within 3 Years

Posted Sep 18, 2013

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk (pictured above) said that the company is working on building a car that would be able to run autonomously within the next 3 years.  The vehicles would use a different form of sensor than what Google is using for their self-driving vehicles.

Nissan and Mercedes are two other car companies that have announced a goal of launching self-driving vehicles by 2020.  Musk believes that Tesla could have autonomous vehicles with the computing owning 90% control of the vehicle within the next 3 years.

“We should be able to do 90 percent [sic] of miles driven within three years,” stated Musk in an interview with the Financial Times.  He added that the project is “not speculation.”  Musk said that the project is done internally rather than with a supplier.  Musk said that it is a “bridge too far” for making cars fully autonomous.  According to Musk, the last few percent is the hardest.
