Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) May Launch AWD Model S Sedan In 2014 [Report]

Posted Aug 6, 2013

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is reportedly working on an all-wheel drive version of the Model S electric sedan.  According to sources with The Verge, the new AWD version of the Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S model may arrive as early as 2014 and may be offered initially in an ultra-premium trim with performance that is equal or better to the current P85 drivetrain that hits 0-60MPH in 4.2 seconds.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is already preparing an AWD chassis for the Model X SUV so this move makes sense.  An AWD version of the Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S would benefit us Midwesterners that have to deal with snowy conditions in the winter.  Currently the Model S is available in a rear-wheel drive configuration.

An AWD version of the Model S likely won’t help Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk hit his goal of creating a $30,000 electric sedan, but it gives Tesla enthusiasts more options.

Earlier this month, we reported that the Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S now has over 8% of the U.S. luxury car market.  The Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S will be updated within the next month or two with phone tethering, tile precaching, and WiFi as well.  General Motors recently formed a special task force to watch the moves that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is making in order to stay competitive in the growing EV market.
