Tomorrow General Motors Company is celebrating 60 years of the Chevrolet Corvette. To celebrate the six decade milestone, the Chevrolet Corvette will have a special edition released called the 2014 Corvette Stingray Coupe. The Stingray will have a Premier Edition model as well.
The Chevrolet Corvette started being built in Flint, Michigan on June 30, 1953. The Corvette has been redesigned to mark the anniversary of the car. Only 500 of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette special edition will be built.
The base model of the special edition Chevrolet Corvette will start at $51,995 including shipping. Chevrolet revealed the 2014 Corvette at the Detroit Auto Show this past January. The first Chevrolet Corvette was created to give GM a way to rival popular European two-seat sports cars. Around 300 of the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette models were created. Over 10 times as many were built in the second year.
In 1955, the Chevrolet Corvette saw a slow-down because Ford released the Ford Thunderbird around then. The Thunderbird was a two-seat sports car with a V-8 engine. When GM hired engineer Zora Arkus Duntov, he stressed that GM should not discontinue the Chevrolet Corvette because it would be an embarrassing failure. GM ended up keeping the Chevrolet Corvette and allowed Duntov to revamp the vehicle. Ford ended up shutting down the Ford thunderbird vehicle.
The new Stingray will be launched at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Stingray will have a unique identification number, starting with 300001 and an exclusive dashboard plaque.
