Isabel Lerer launches The Dodo with almost $2 million in seed funding

The Dodo is an animal focused website that has launched this week. The website was co-founded by Isabel Lerer. Isabel’s father Ken is known for being a co-founder of The Huffington Post and works as the chairman of BuzzFeed and Betaworks.

The Dodo has raised nearly $2 million in a seed round of funding led by Lerer Ventures, a fund that is managed by Ken and his son Ben Lerer. Ben Lerer is known for being a co-founder of Thrillist. Other investors that participated in this round include Greycroft, RRE Ventures, Softbank Capital, Sterling Equities, and Fred Harman.

The Dodo will be utilizing content management system RebelMouse, which is a company that Lerer Investments put money into. BuzzFeed and Huffington Post co-founder Jonah Peretti will serve as an adviser to The Dodo.

Stories posted on The Dodo will have an emphasis on animal rights. The Dodo is also run by former editor-in-chief Kerry Lauerman. Popular Science associate editor Dan Nosowitz joined The Dodo as well.
