TeliaSonera and its subsidiary in Nepal is working on setting up 3G high speed communication at the top of Mount Everest. Climbers that reach the top of the 8,848 meter peak in Mount Everest had previously depended on expensive satellite phone converge. China Mobile set up a voice-only network in 2007.
There is a total of eight base stations and four of them will run on solar power. The lowest tower in the Everest region will be at 2,870 meters (9,400 feet).
“This is a great milestone for mobile communications, and strong evidence of TeliaSonera?s pioneering role in this industry that is truly changing the lives of billions of people?, stated TeliaSonera President and CEO Lars Nyberg. ?We are very proud to announce the world?s highest mobile data service as we launch 3G services in the Mount Everest area in the Khumbu valley. From its perch on the world?s tallest mountain, 3G high speed internet will bring faster, more affordable telecommunication services to the people living in the Khumbu Valley, trekkers, and climbers alike.”
