Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company has sold over 13 million Apple TV devices. The announcement was made at the AllThingsD annual conference. Cook said that Apple was selling a few hundred thousand Apple TVs per year. Over 6.5 million Apple TVs have sold in the past year alone, according to Mashable.
Cook added that television continues to be an “area of great interest” for the company. This number is encouraging because Apple does not promote the Apple TV as much as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod.
Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, the executive producers of the AllThingsD conference, tried to get an answer out of Cook about whether Apple is going to build a television set of their own as indicated by Steve Jobs’ biography. However Cook resisted from providing any details about that.
The Apple TV has grown rapidly over the last few years. For example, Cook announced in July 2012 that they have sold 4 million Apple TVs in the fiscal year. Not bad considering the Apple TV is a “hobby” for the company.
