Top Hat is an education startup that has raised $10.5 million in Series B funding. Top hat helps professors give instant quizzes, list homework, set up study tournaments, measure class participation, and provide real-time feedback on students’ mobile phones. This round of funding was led by Georgian Partners with participation from Emergence Capital Partners and iNovia Capital.

Top Hat has raised a total of $20 million in total funding. The service is used at over 400 universities by around 300,000 students.

A University of Waterloo chemistry professor used Top Hat to write his own interactive organic chemistry textbook using Top Hat. If enough students use the service at one university, the company will try to upsell the university on a site license.

Top Hat will be using the funding to add more staff and continue its expansion into corporate training.
