Toyota is recalling 2.27 million vehicles due to airbag glitch

Toyota is recalling almost 650,000 vehicles in Japan and is repeating a recall for problems with front passenger air bag inflators announced last year. Toyota is seeking to fix around 2.27 million vehicles.

Toyota said that it is re-notifying owners of some vehicles involved in a 2013 safety recall of 2.14 million vehicles. The initial recall was based on incomplete serial numbers from the supplier, Takata Corp. The inflators contain improperly made propellant that causes them to work abnormally and possibly cause fires.

Toyota said it had received one report of a burn on a seat cover due to faulty air bag deployment. The recall involves around 20 Toyota models, including the Corolla compacts, Tundra pickups, and Lexus SC 430 coupes made in the U.S. The models being recalled in Japan were made between 2000 and 2003.
