Twitter Buys Social Startup Spindle

Posted Jun 20, 2013

Twitter has acquired a social startup company called Spindle.  Spindle helps you discover social updates from nearby shops, restaurants, parks, event venues, bars, and galleries.  Spindle analyzes content from social media services Twitter and Facebook to help deliver users local points of interest based on tweets, locations, and the time of day.

“We?ve spent the past two and a half years building a product that helps you answer the question: ‘What?s happening nearby right now?'” said Spindle in a blog post.  “Every time we?ve experimented and looked beyond local discovery, we?ve been amazed by the breadth and quality of content shared on Twitter.”  The company added that they will be able to help you find interesting, timely, and useful information about what is happening around you.

Twitter is shutting down the service and Spindle’s team will likely work on a local discovery service on the micro-blogging service.  Spindle’s team will be relocating from their headquarters in Boston to Twitter’s office in San Francisco.  The terms of the deal was undisclosed.
