The patent arm of the University of New Mexico called STC is suing Intel over a patent infringement that is related to advanced chip manufacturing. The Univ. of New Mexico is assigned to patent number #6,042,998: “Method and apparatus for extending spatial frequencies in photolithography.”
Lithography technology is important for the manufacturing of chips with tiny features that are the size of a few atoms that are connected. There are five companies that have licensing deals with STC for use of its patents, including Toshiba, Samsung, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC).
“STC filed this complaint to ensure that the interests of the University of New Mexico, its inventors and its licensees are protected and that the STC receives the compensation to which it is entitled for Intel Corporation’s unlicensed use of the advanced technology,” said the university in a statement.
