Verizon Accidentally Sends Emergency Text Message Alert To Customers

Posted Dec 13, 2011

At about 12:27PM yesterday, Verizon Wireless accidentally sent out an emergency text alert message that said “Civil Emergency in this area until 1:24 PM EST Take Shelter Now U.S. Govern.” Yikes, that would scare some customers. The emergency message was sent to the New Jersey Verizon Wireless users in Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex counties.

Some people wrote about it on Twitter and others called 911. Police told Verizon customers that it was a false alarm. A Verizon spokesman said that it was a test message. The message was part of the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), an emergency initiative involving carriers, the FCC, and FEMA.
