After iOS 6 was launched to the public yesterday, the Maps application powered by Google in the past was replaced by Apple’s own Maps application. The question remains about whether Google will create their own Maps app independently and release it to the Apple App Store. SearchEngineLand.com contacted Google to find out and this is what they said:
We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system.
What this sounds like is that Google wants to develop a map app for iOS 6, but has not confirmed when it will happen. We just have to wait and see. After YouTube was removed as a default app on iOS 6, Google decided to create a separate YouTube app that could be downloaded from the Apple App Store and it is much better than the default application that they provided to Apple in the past. My guess is that Apple blocked YouTube from being able to update the default YouTube app. If you would still like to use Google Maps through iOS 6, your best bet is to use the mobile Safari browser to visit maps.google.com.
