WhatsApp is a popular app that lets you set up group chats.  The app lets you share pictures, videos, voice memos, audio notes, contacts, and location info.  Even though WhatsApp has a lot of competition, it still remains as the dominant messaging app choice.

WhatsApp used to cost $0.99 on iOS, but they gone the “freemium” route now.  WhatsApp users can download the app for free for a year, then they will be charged only $0.99 per year after that.  Not a bad way to get a lot more users to join the service.

WhatsApp has already been doing this on Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, and Windows Phone.  If you already bought the app for the $0.99, the good news is that you will not have to pay the annual fee of $0.99.  WhatsApp currently has over 200 million monthly active users and is seeing around 10 billion messages sent / 17 billion messages received per day.
