On New Year’s Eve, the mobile messaging application WhatsApp processed 18 billion messages. The breakdown was 11 billion outbound messages and 7 billion inbound messages. This beats a previous record of 10 billion messages in a day set on August 10th. The company sees more outbound messages than inbound because of group chats. Sending one message into a group chat of 10 people is 1:10 (inbound:outbound). Apple’s iMessage hits over 1 billion messages per day as of June. The $0.99 WhatsApp application is available on Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, Nokia S40, and Windows Phone devices. The service lets users exchange messages without a paid SMS plan. At one point WhatsApp was rumored to be in acquisition talks with Facebook. Supposedly Facebook wanted to acquire WhatsApp to boost their mobile presence. WhatsApp denied the talks.
On Dec 31st we had a new record day: 7B msgs inbound, 11B msgs outbound = 18 billion total messages processed in one day! Happy 2013!!!
