The White House has made the “We The People” online petition system open source. The source code can be found on GitHub and people can use it for their own purposes or developers can help improve and expand its functionality.
The tool is used on whitehouse.gov so that users can post petitions and gather signatures online. The current petitions include instituting a no-fly zone over Syria or requesting that The White House releases the recipe for Honey Ale.
“There is so much that can be done to improve this system,” stated the White House director of digital strategy Macon Phillips, “and we only benefit by being able to more easily collaborate with designers and engineers around the country ? and the world.”
The “We The People” petition was originally launched in September 2011 and President Obama had promised that the technology would be shared.
