Why Facebook Users Turned Their Profile Pictures Into Red Equal Signs

Posted Mar 27, 2013

You will notice that between today and yesterday, many people made their photo a red equal sign as shown in the picture below.  The symbol first seemed to have spread from the Human Rights Campaign, which is an organization that promotes equal rights for LGBT individuals.  The Supreme Court is currently reviewing Proposition 8, which does not allow same-sex marriage in California.  HRC’s usual logo is this same symbol, but in yellow and navy.  The red and white version of the logo symbolizes love.

“Make sure you wear red to show your support for marriage equality. And make your Facebook profile red too” said the HRC when sharing this photo.  The photo has been shared over 67,000 times so far since being uploaded yesterday morning and hit almost 20,000 likes.  Celebrities like Ellen Degeneres and Lance bass changed their pictures to the red equal sign to show their support.

The HRC also has an online petition that you can sign at this link.

Update (12:19pm EST): Several U.S. Supreme Court justices indicated today that they will strike down a law that denies federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.
