Last October Google announced that they would start charging companies for placing Google Maps within their websites and services. Google was already charging some of the biggest users service fees that could hit six figures per year. Smaller websites started being charged when they generated an average of 25,000 map views per day. This is one of the biggest reasons why Foursquare started using OpenStreetMap, a user-contributed map service that is managed similarly as Wikipedia.
Foursquare is not the only recognizable brand that started using OpenStreetMap. In the new version of the iPhoto application, Apple started using OpenStreetMap for the iPhone and iPad.
