Winamp Is Shutting Down On December 20th After 15 Years

Posted Nov 21, 2013

We will miss Winamp whipping the llama’s ass for the last 15 years.  The free music player launched in the late 1990s, but it will now be shutting down December 20th, 2013.

“ and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date,” stated Winamp.  “Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 year.”

Winamp allowed users to play MP3 music files with custom skins and plugins since 1998.  Former Winamp employees blamed AOL for the mismanagement of the software.  AOL acquired Winamp’s parent company Nullsoft in 1999 for over $80 million.  Winamp currently generates $6 million per year.
