Microsoft Corporation announced in a blog post that they have dropped the Windows Phone developer registration cost to $19 for 60 days and the normal price is $99 per year. The Windows Phone marketplace now has over 160,000 applications.
In terms of comparison, the Windows 8 marketplace has already hit 100,000 apps and is hitting over 200 million monthly downloads. Microsoft is seeing daily revenue across the Windows Phone app marketplace rise 2.5x since the release of Windows Phone 8.
Windows Phone saw the largest year-over-year (YOY) gain amongst all of the leading operating systems (131% YOY), which is more than double the size from a year ago. They jumped over BlackBerry for third place.
