Yahoo! said on Thursday that they were hit by hackers. A number of Yahoo! Mail users were hit by the attack. Yahoo! Mail’s Jay Rossiter did not say how many accounts were hit by the hack, but the company has taken immediate action and contacted the affected users. Yahoo! Mail has around 273 million accounts worldwide and 81 million are in the U.S. There is no evidence that suggests that personal data was taken from Yahoo!’s servers.
Malicious software was used to access the Yahoo! accounts using the login credentials. Yahoo! reset the passwords on the affected accounts and used second sign-in verification to allow the users to choose a new password.
Yahoo! is working with federal law enforcement to see if the hackers can be found.
