Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) chief executive officer Marissa Mayer has apologized for the Yahoo! Mail outage.
“This has been a very frustrating week for our users and we are very sorry,” stated Mayer. “For many of us, Yahoo Mail is a lifeline to our friends, family members and customers. This week, we experienced a major outage that not only interrupted that connection, but caused many of you a massive inconvenience ? that?s unacceptable and it?s something we?re taking very seriously. Unfortunately, the outage was much more complex than it seemed at first, which is why it?s taking us several days to resolve the compounding issues.”
On December 9th, the network operating center alerted the Mail engineering team about a hardware outage in one of the storage systems that affects around 1% of their users. The Mail team worked with the storage engineers to restore access and move to the back-up systems. The full recovery was expected to be completed by 1:30PM Pacific Time on Tuesday. However, this type of outage was rare. Throughout the rest of the week, Yahoo! worked around the clock to restore access and messages to inboxes, including restoring IMAP access for people that use third party e-mail applications like Outlook and Apple Mail for accessing Yahoo! Mail.
