Google has announced that they are bringing original programming to France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Google invested $100 million in the first set of 100 original channels as of last October. They have seen a lot of success because the top 25 channels average over one million views per week.
Around 800 million viewers watch a total of 4 billion hours of video per month. Google said that subscriptions doubled year-over-year and their partners are hitting 100,000 subscribers 5 times faster than they were two years ago. Google is investing an additional $200 million into the original programming initiative to create an additional 50 channels.
?I believe that every interest will, at some point, have a channel serving that interest,? stated YouTube’s global head of content Robert Kyncl in an interview with The New York Times. ?People are building channels and creating audiences, which is something they couldn?t do before in such numbers.?
