Zach Braff’s Movie Project Surpasses $1.5 Million In Kickstarter Funding Within 1 Day

One of my favorite TV shows is Scrubs.  The main character on that show, J.D., was played by Zach Braff.  In 2004, Braff directed a movie called Garden State, which was a cult hit.  Many of Braff’s fans on Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit asked him when he would direct a movie again just like Garden State.  He said that there are numerous reasons, but the primary reason is funding and creative control.  When hearing about the success of the Veronica Mars movie on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter, Braff decided to utilize the same resources by posting on Kickstarter himself.  Braff’s Kickstarter posting went live yesterday and already hit $1.5 million out of the $2 million goal.

The movie that Braff is working on with his brother is called “Wish I Was Here.”  The movie may feature cameos from Donald Faison (played Turk on Scrubs), Jim Parson (Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory), and Chris Hardwick (Comedian and podcast host).  The script for the movie has been at a standstill for about 4 years due to financing issues.

Below is a description of the movie and a promo video for the Kickstarter project:

“Wish I Was Here” is the story of Aidan Bloom (played by me), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (ages 5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them.

The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.
