When Twitter launched in 2006, it was not an instant access. The adoption rate was quite slow, but today there are over 140 million active users and 1.6 billion search queries are being handled per day. In June 2008, Twitter noticed that a large number of celebrities and personalities were joining their website so they launched a “verification program” to show proof that it is actually them. Together these celebrities have millions of followers tracking everything they say. It is a great way for celebrities to directly give their opinion on issues without having to deal with the media.
